Syrian troops will begin withdrawing from Lebanon on Monday, the Lebanese defence minister said. Abdul-Rahim Murad said the troops would withdraw from Mount Lebanon and northern Lebanon toward the eastern Bekaa Valley closer to the Lebanon-Syria border. Syrian President Bashar Assad and Lebanese President Emile Lahoud are set to meet in Damascus to discuss the details. On Saturday, bowing to international pressure, Assad announced a two-step withdrawal of the nation's 15,000 troops to the Lebanese border.
