Mike Leigh's movie "Vera Drake" with three Oscar nominations, opens the 9th International Sofia Film Fest on Friday.
The picture has been nominated for Best Director category, Best Actress for Imelda Staunton, original script for Mike Leigh. "Vera Drake" (Great Britain/France, 2004) received a Golden Lion at Venice festival in 2004 for best picture as well as the Volpi Cup for Best Actress, Imelda Staunton. It has 11 nominations for the most prestigious British Film Awards, BAFTA, among which the Best Film and Best Actress Awards.
For two weeks Bulgarian movie fans will be able to enjoy over 200 masterpieces, including classic and debut titles in five Sofia cinemas.
British director Peter Greenaway will be one of the 200 guests to arrive in Sofia for the special event. He will attend the opening ceremony of the festival.
Pictures from all over the world will be shown in different sections, including the traditional International competition, Bulgarian feature films, Balkan films showcase, European screen, World screen, Bulgarian shorts, documentaries, and retrospectives and tribute.
For the last years the fest has grown into one of the major film events of Central-East Europe.
