Bulgaria Mints Vivid Spring Coin

Bulgaria's Central Bank will introduce this week a vivid, colourful coin marked with the hues of popular springtime holiday Baba Marta.

The festivity takes place every year on March 1, and to many people heralds the beginning of spring. There is a strong Bulgarian tradition for presenting family and friends with red-and-white knotworks, called "martenitsa," on that day.

The "Baba Marta" coin series is the latest in a special collection representing traditional Bulgarian holidays. The colours have been applied by hand on each coin, and that rare method makes the coins especially attractive, the Bulgarian National Bank said.

Other colourful series put out by the bank were Christmas-mood "Survakari", the beautiful "Tsvetnitsa" and the touching "Detstvo Moe" ("My Childhood").
