At least 400 people have been killed and 1000 injured in a strong quake which hit Kerman province in southeastern Iran, state television announced. The US Geological Survey said the earthquake measured 6.4 on the Richter scale and was located 60 kilometres northwest of the city of Kerman. Several villages are said to have been destroyed, according to officials. The toll was expected to rise, with communications by road or telephone very difficult.
