Famous conceptual artists, Bulgaria-born Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude, are expected to accept Sofia mayor invitation for staging their first ever exhibition here next year.

The sensational news was broken by Sofia City Gallery director Vessela Radoeva, who has personally handed an invitation to the famous couple during her recent visit to New York.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude have given indications they might agree to visit Bulgaria, provided that a museum or a collector purchases some of their works.

Accepting no sponsors, grants or merchandising income, the couple finance their projects only from the sale of the sketches and drawings -- ranging up to wall-sized works priced at USD 600,000 -- that Christo makes ahead of each project.

Last Saturday Christo and Jeanne-Claude unveiled their long-awaited USD 20 M art project "The Gates", with mayor Michael Bloomberg dropping the first piece of saffron-colored fabric in New York Central Park.

Both Christo and Jeanne-Claude was born on June 13, 1935, he in Bulgaria, she in Morocco. They have lived for 41 years in New York.
