Pope Calls for Italian Hostage Release

For the first time since leaving hospital a few days ago, Pope John Paul the II has appeared at the Vatican in Rome, in a move apparently aiming to show himself able to continue his mission. During his usual Sunday blessing he called on Iraqi insurgents to release Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena and other hostages. The 84-year-old pontiff was tired, but his voice was clear and audible.
