Hamas Wins Gaza Local Elections

Palestinian militant group Hamas has won a sweeping victory in local elections in Gaza, according to unofficial results. Hamas, regarded by Israel as a terrorist group, reportedly won 77 out of 118 seats in 10 districts polled. The ruling Fatah faction of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas won 26 seats. As well as carrying out attacks on Israeli soldiers and civilians, Hamas is known in Gaza for operating schools and a welfare system.
