Incumbent Croatian President Stipe Mesic won a second mandate in Sunday's presidential runoff, defeating the female candidate of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union. With 99% of ballots counted, Mesic won 66% of the votes against 34% for his rival, Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor. "I thank everybody who votes for me as well as those who cast ballots," Mesic said in a speech early Monday shortly after the results were announced by the National Election Commission. "Croatia has passed a long way in building its democracy," he said, calling for united efforts of all sides to achieve Croatia's integration into the mainstream Europe. About 4.4 million people have registered to vote. The turnout was just over 50%.
