All Roma groups in Bulgaria started Friday their St. Basil's Day feast, or Bango Vassili - the Roma New Year.

Bango Vassili (literally "Limping Vassil") is celebrated as the patron of Roma people, and to them the major holiday can be compared only to St. George's Day.

Preparations for the holiday could start a week earlier. On St. Basil's Day, a festive family dinner with a deep symbolic meaning brings relatives together. The front door should be closed when the dinner starts, and until midnight none of the family is allowed to go out and no stranger is allowed to enter the home.

For some Roma groups the celebrations continue for three days.
