Iraqi PM Extends Emergency Laws

Iraqi interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi has extended for 30 days emergency laws that give his government special powers to crack down on insurgents. Allawi said the laws were extended because of the ongoing militant attacks aimed at derailing Iraq's upcoming elections. The emergency laws give Allawi the power to impose curfews, close borders and airports and detain suspected insurgents without following normal legal procedures. Despite the continuing violence, US and Iraqi officials insist the poll will be held as scheduled on January 30. Emergency rule was first imposed for 60 days in November before a major assault on the rebel stronghold of Falluja.
