US six-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps has pleaded guilty to drink-and-drive charges and was put on a 18 months probation by a Maryland court.
The 19-year-old sporting hero was fined USD 250 and was ordered to give speeches to children at three local schools to warn them about the dangers of alcohol. The judge also ordered him to abstain from alcohol and illegal drugs during his probation.
Phelps was arrested in Maryland in the beginning of November, and shortly after admitted to making a "serious" mistake.
He had snatched eight medals, six of them gold, in the Olympic Games in Athens.
