Christmas Shopping in Sofia: Fun or Fray?

Imagine that you are one of those modern urban types who have a thing with genuine leather, dazzling designer tops, fashion jewellery, fragrances and perfectly cut denim pieces. Imagine that dropping in to some boutique after a busy working day and indulging yourself in a new fashion item has unconditional relaxing power. It is probably not hard to do that.

The ubiquitous shopping euphoria around Christmas also gives you extra inspiration to go out on the buy.

Well, here's the bad news - shopping for Christmas presents in Sofia this year could turn out to be more of a challenge than a peaceful tour around favourite fashion places. Forget about taking your time to happily chat with friends while experimenting in the dressing room for hours. With newly-opened boutiques, a better developed business and an apparent increase of the number of fashion-minded people, the gift-hunter flux is overwhelming in the last days before Christmas.

Boutiques at the Vitosha Street, the capital city's main shopping area, are already wooing fashion fellows with special discounts. The cut prices have tempted even those who are on a budget to stop by and browse the stands, which means a multiplied number of visitors.

Not to the casual wear areas, though. Elegant dresses in black and glittering party clothing are a mania now and you may find it difficult to choose a set for a night out during the holidays. Getting sweaty and nervy outside the dress room is guaranteed, and even shopping sites that are usually less popular are now choke-full.

The finishing touch to your perfect big-night image - the designer scent - is yet another battle. Major perfumery stores were quick to introduce beautiful gift sets at reasonable prices in the beginning of December, and the alluring eau de toilette, body milk, shimmering powder and aroma crиme kits landed on the pages of all major beauty magazines. Most companies also offer purses, watches, dressing cases, bracelets or other knick-knacks as a present that goes with the Christmas sets.

It is not a surprise that hordes of foppish ladies, or their boyfriends, are rushing into the stores to look for the perfect, charming, beautifully wrapped, odorous present.

The best piece of advice would probably be not to wait until 6 p.m. to start your shopping trip. Take an hour or two off the day's office schedule instead, and visit your favourite boutiques when work keeps most shoppers away from the streets.

Map out several places, and be careful not to get carried away gaping at the colourful shop windows all the way.

Bringing along several friends with you for sweet chitchatting is a classic. But go on your own this time - you don't want an extra two or three people to the jostling crowd inside the room. Besides, waiting for your buddies to try something on would only spin out the gift quest even further.

No need to mention that you should only look for buys that are urgently needed. With all the shopping going on, you might get in the mood for a new refrigerator, upholstery for the car seats, bathroom curtains, a video camera...Try to bottle up that feeling until holiday season is over. That will save you much needed time for Christmas preparations, not to mention the fact that most stores introduce great discounts in January.

Simply focus. In two weeks, you will have a whole new year to shop for fun. But for now fashion areas should be seen as a battlefield, and choosing a party outfit for yourself and presents for friends and family is a high-priority challenging task.

Setting aside all that fuss, there is definitely good news for the business. It's hard to imagine how much money is being poured into clothing, accessories and perfumery trade these days, which, hopefully, means a greater fashion variety next year and better services in the sector. An option that would be worth considering is online trade, which is already a craze in the West but still undeveloped in Bulgaria.

And isn't Christmastime all about feeling positive even when there are some small holdbacks?
