Imperial Tobacco, cheered by regaining its market leadership in the UK, is now on the hunt to make acquisitions overseas and particularly in countries where cigarette manufacturing is being privatised.

These include Bulgaria, Kenya, Morocco, Taiwan and Turkey, while there is also the possibility Imperial may get into the possible auction for Reemtsma. The German company is the fourth largest cigarette group in the world, best known internationally for Peter Stuyvesant, Polo and West and could be worth around (pounds) 3bn.
