New Row as EU Body Steps in Office

The European Union's new executive commission took office on Monday after a three-week delay facing yet another fierce row over one of its members. A legal controversy surrounding the French commissioner in charge of transport, Jacques Barrot, grabbed the limelight from commission president Jose Manuel Barroso's aim of focusing on tough issues such as EU economic reform. MEPs urged a review of Jacques Barrot's position when it emerged he had failed to reveal a conviction for embezzlement - later quashed under a French amnesty. But Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso reaffirmed his confidence in Barrot, saying he would make an "excellent commissioner".
