The Pentagon is building the military's world wide web, which is believed to be the most powerful weapon in the US arsenal, The New York Times reports. According to the article the aim of the Global Information Grid (GIG) is to give all American commanders and troops a moving picture of all foreign enemies and threats. The "Internet in the sky" would allow US soldiers anywhere to "open up their laptops, request imagery" from a spy satellite and "get it downloaded within seconds," Peter Teets, under secretary ofthe Air Force, was quoted as telling the Congress. The first connections of the network were laid six weeks ago. Estimates show it may take two decades and hundreds of billions of dollars to build the new war net and its components.
