The unmatchable rock-engraved relief of the Madara Horseman, north Bulgaria, will go under preservation works with the UNESCO financial support of USD 25,000.

In 2002 UNESCO allotted another USD 10,000 for scientific researches on the figure of a horseman piercing a lion with his spear. The relief is engraved into the sheer rock of a plateau near the oldest Bulgarian capital of Pliska standing at a height of 23 m.

French and German microbiologists have worked on the monument earlier this year as part of the UN project for saving the unique historical monument.

The Madara Horseman seen as symbol of Bulgarian statesmanship is the only one of its kind all over Europe.
