Democrat John Edwards accused Vice President Dick Cheney of "not being straight with the American people" about conditions in Iraq in a debate that has taken on added importance after the race for the White House tightened in the past week. Edwards, looking to build on the momentum from Democratic candidate John Kerry's first debate with President George W. Bush last week, quickly tried to put Cheney on the defensive by saying he was overstating progress in Iraq while American casualties increase. Cheney, hoping to calm Republican nerves after the first presidential debate was widely seen as a victory for Kerry, defended the Iraq war as an essential element in the war on terrorism and that it defeated a tyrant.
