Bulgarian Prime Minister’s meeting with Kofi Annan generated mutual sympathies. This was pointed out by Danilo Turk, UN Deputy Secretary General. He together with other members of the Kofi Annan team was present at the meeting. According to Danilo Turk this would be very useful to Bulgaria when the country starts to fulfill its obligations as Security Council nonpermanent member.

The picture of Svetlin Russev which the Prime Minister handed to Kofi Annan on the occasion of his Nobel Prize for peace was a very important gesture. It became clear that both sides share one and the same perception of the United Nations role under the new conditions. As well as the extreme importance of its opinion in solving conflicts. The lunch that the Prime Minister gave for the UN Security Council member states deserves special notice. It was for the first time that all these states gathered together at the invitation of Bulgaria. First of all, the five member states, which have the last say on the most important issue of peace and stability on the planet. The lunch turned into the first working lunch for Bulgaria as Security Council nonpermanent member. Representatives of the United States, Great Britain, Russia, France and China were present at the lunch together with the Security Council ten nonpermanent member-states.

In his address to the United Nations General Assembly Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg presented Bulgaria’s new government and its foreign policy. Through the speech the Prime Minister presented himself as well. The importance of this speech is obvious. It outlined Bulgaria’s foreign priorities from the forum of greatest importance. Outside the hall numerous delegations’ representatives waited for Simeon Saxe-Coburg to congratulate him. This seemingly secondary detail is invested with significance when it is compared with other statements. One topic of the Prime Minister’s speech should be pointed out, which led to the wide support he gained. Talking about the threat the terrorism poses before the democratic world, he warned against yet another threat – poverty.

The Prime Minister met with the Chairman of the General Assembly and Foreign Minister of Korea. Bilateral relations were discussed at the meeting. The meeting of the Prime Minister with members of the Foreign Policy Council was extremely interesting. This is the most influential American brain trust on foreign policy issues. Analysts, scientists, researchers and journalists on the “Newsweek” and “The Economists” magazines took part in the discussion. We can only feel sorry that the organizations insisted that the meeting be held behind closed doors. The answers they received to their questions were reasonable and trustworthy.
