German Party: Keep Turkey out of EU

The leader of Germany's centre-right opposition party, Angela Merkel, has called on leaders of EU member countries to block Turkey's full membership in the EU, offering instead a "privileged partnership", according to the EUobserver online edition. The centre-left Government of Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder does not support the concept of Merkel's party, Christian Democrats (CDU). The letter comes just weeks before the European Commission is due to publish its opinion on whether Turkey should start accession negotiations with the EU. Turkey has suffered slashing EU criticism because of delaying an important penal code reform, concerning the criminalisation of adultery.
