After only the first of six days of competition, Hong Kong is on track to equal or better its stellar performance in men's wheelchair fencing at the Sydney Paralympics, where it captured more than a quarter of all medals on offer.

In four events on Saturday - two categories each of women's epee and men's foil -- Hong Kong fencers, trained by an inspiring coach, have already racked up three gold and two silver medals, most of them going to women.

Poland, with three medals, was the only other country to earn more than one on this first day of competition.

Isabel Newstead retained her shooting title as Britain continued to impress on the second day in Athens. Newstead sealed victory in the air pistol to add to the bronze won earlier by cyclists Ian Sharpe and Paul Hunter in the 4km tandem individual pursuit.

In wheelchair rugby, reigning European wheelchair rugby champions Great Britain got their campaign off to a winning start against Belgium with a 27-22 victory in Group B. They will next face Canada and Germany, two of the competition's strongest teams.
