Cancer Spreads in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is among the countries worst hit by cancer, recent survey shows.

Seven Bulgarians out of one hundred become victims of the disease and each year nearly 20,000 Bulgarians die because of cancer, Health Ministry announced.

Health officials say that main reason for the high death rate is the fact that cancer awareness in the country is not widely spread. There should be more campaigns on that subject and more information should be presented to the Bulgarian society, medics say.

Ten Bulgarian women are diagnosed with breast cancer every day, which makes it 3,600 new cases every year. The figures were made public at a working meeting held Friday ahead of the start of a national campaign against breast cancer. The campaign is scheduled to begin October 1.

As part of the campaign, women are offered free prophylactic examinations. Last year's campaign against breast cancer included 30,000 women.
