Bulgaria's capital celebrated on Friday St Sofia Day, the date when the Orthodox world pays homage to the three biblical sisters Faith, Hope and Love.

President Georgi Parvanov attended the official ceremony of hoisting Sofia's flag at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier.

Charity concerts and exhibitions and theatre plays were among a number of initiatives, planned to mark the Day of Sofia.

Later in the evening distinguished Bulgarian artists were awarded for achievements in arts and culture during the concert at Bulgaria Hall.

In 1992 Sofia municipal council selected this date for Sofia's Day at the proposal of Sofia's mayor.

Between 1979 and 1992 Sofia's Day was marked on April 3, the day when Sofia was pronounced Bulgaria's capital back in 1879.
