Pets: Dog-and-Kid Safety

Society | September 17, 2004, Friday // 00:00

Despite what most parents assume, not every dog is a willing companion and an entertainer for the children.

Careful researching needs to be done once you've decided to get your kid a canine friend. Talking to owners, reading up on breeds and visiting some good pet shops are all necessary before you move to buy a pet.

The next step is to carefully choose the time at which to bring the new family member home. Over the weekend is the most appropriate. You will have enough time to spend with both the kids and the pet, and monitor whether they make a good team.

Holiday time, on the contrary, could make the experience rather stressful with a lot of fuss and commotion.

At first you will have to supervise all interactions between the children and the dog, to make sure all are safe. Remember: children are not born with the knowledge about how to treat a pet. Show your infant how to play with the doggy: gently, with no squeezing or pulling hair.

Try to keep the children's yelling and squealing low, since a dog's hearing is much sharper than men's.
