Bulgaria triumphed over host Iceland 3:1 in the opening match of World Cup 2006 qualifying campaign.

Forward Dimitar Berbatov scored two of the goals in the 35th and 49th minute.

Hristo Yanev netted the third goal in the 62nd minute of the match, accompanied by a pouring rain.

In its next match Bulgaria will face Croatia.

Iceland play Hungary in Budapest on September 8.

Bulgaria's football coach Stoitchkov had vowed the team would play to win in its opening FIFA World Cup qualifier.

"I have faith in the boys, and our only goal is victory," Hristo Stoitchkov assured earlier in the week.
