Bulgaria's best tennis player Magdalena Maleeva was defeated in the second-round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament.

19-year-old Angela Haynes (US), seeded 185, upset veteran Maleeva, 6-2, 6-3. Maggie Maleeva qualified for the second-round of the U.S. Open after she disputed the three sets with Italian Flavia Pennetta on Monday.

No. 1 Roger Federer defeated qualifier Marcos Baghdatis 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-1, to advance to Round 3 of the 2004 US Open. Also in action, Jennifer Capriati cruised to victory in her second-round match, defeating Magui Serna, 6-0, 6-2.

Serena Williams held off a stiff challenge and Amelie Mauresmo was forced to rally, but both advanced. Other winners include Bob and Mike Bryan, Lleyton Hewitt, David Nalbandian, Tommy Haas, Sebastien Grosjean, Elena Dementieva and Vera Zvonareva.
