Bulgaria's best tennis player Magdalena Maleeva advanced to the second-round of the U.S. Open after a victory during Monday's opening day.

Maleeva overwhelmed 44-ranked Italian Flavia Pennetta (2:6, 6:4, 6:4) in a two-hour tennis match.

She will now face 19-year-old Angela Haynes (US), seeded 185, who overcame Ukraine's Perebiynis.

The second-seeded Mauresmo had little trouble in a 6-4, 6-2 victory over American Marissa Irvin.

The third-seeded Williams, two- time Open champion, overwhelmed Czech Sandra Kleinova 6-1, 6-3.
