The brother of Bulgaria's top gymnast, Olympic medallist Jordan Jovtchev, was stabbed with a knife by store robbers.

The incident took place in the Jovchevs' home city of Plovdiv. Bulgarian newspapers wrote that Georgi Jovchev, 32, tried to stop the robbers of a nearby furniture store. After a short chase, Jovtchev came to grips with one of the suspects, who managed to knife him and then get away in a taxi.

After receiving medical aid, Georgi was released from hospital on the same evening.

His brother Jordan was awarded a silver medal in the Olympic men's ring contest. The 31-year-old Jovchev was obviously neglected by a host-dominated jury and garnered 9.850. the judging, which crowned with gold Greek Dimosthenis Tampakos, outscoring the Bulgarian by just 0.012.

Jovtchev is the only Bulgarian gymnast to have won two medals each in two Olympic Games, in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.
