A spectacular pyrotechnics, music and dance extravaganza fascinated viewers around the globe at the opening of the Athens Olympic Games Friday evening.

Some 72,000 spectators were at the Athens Olympic Stadium to enjoy the spectacle, while an estimated four billion viewed it on television.

There were some 9,000 artists creating a colourful kaleidoscope before the viewers.

Athens won the race to host the 2004 event seven years ago, at the 106th IOC session in Lausanne. The Greek capital defeated Rome in the final round of the vote by 66 to 41.

The major Athens event will see 95 Bulgarian athletes that will participate in 17 sports.
