Supporters and foes of Venezuela's embattled President Hugo Chavez took to the streets in separate demonstrations leading up to a crucial referendum vote. At separate ends of the capital, hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans either cheered or jeered the leftist Chavez, whose six years in office have been some of the most tumultuous in Venezuela's recent history. Since his election in 1998, the president has revised the constitution, survived numerous coup attempts, and overseen Venezuela's economic demise, all the while being hailed by the nation's poor as a champion of the disadvantaged.
