New Jersey Governor James McGreevey announced abruptly yesterday he was quitting because of an extramarital homosexual affair. The Democratic governor and father of two children made the surprise announcement with his wife at his side in a short televised address from the state capitol. "Shamefully, I engaged in an adult consensual affair with another man, which violates my bonds of matrimony," Mr. McGreevey said. "It was wrong; it was foolish; it was inexcusable, and for this I ask the forgiveness and the grace of my wife." "My truth is that I am a gay American," he said. The governor had publicly opposed gay marriage, but also pushed for some of the nation's most liberal legislation, affording same-sex partners in New Jersey spousal benefits, including medical and legal rights.
