Fierce clashes were reported in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf between US marines and militants loyal to radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. The confrontation has been going on for about two weeks, apparently entering into an even more violent stage on Thursday. Witnesses have reported about hearing machine gun and tank fire in the city. Al-Sadr's militia have threatened to blow up oil pipelines in southern Iraq in case of Najaf raid.
