The Statue of Liberty reopens to visitors on Tuesday for the first time since the September 11, 2001, attacks following security and safety improvements paid for by more than USD 30 M in donations. The national monument in New York Harbor was closed nearly three years ago as a security precaution after Islamic militants killed nearly 3,000 people in hijacked jet attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. A private fund-raising campaign has paid for the search equipment and fire safety measures that led to the reopening of the statue.
