France-Iraq Ties Restored

Iraq and France have restored their diplomatic relations, and plan to exchange ambassadors as soon as possible. Ties between the two countries were severed in 1991 by Iraq's then leader Saddam Hussein. The move followed French contribution in the war to expel Iraqi forces from Kuwait. The decision to restore the diplomatic relations was announced simultaneously in Baghdad and Paris.
