Athens Plunges into Darkness

A power blackout hit the Greek capital around noon today. The officials are still uncertain as to the cause of the failure. The main electricity network may have crashed because of a surge in air conditioner use during a heatwave over the last few days, local media said. Traffic lights turned off across Athens, while some radio reports said the suburban railways and the city's metro system were affected.
