Foreigner Tipped to Head Bulgaria's Football Team

The Bulgarian Football Union may opt for a Romanian or Croatian coach of the national football team, according to media reports.

Romanian Mihai Stoica and Croatian Mirco Jozic are said to be the two most eligible candidates because of their modest financial demands.

Mihai Stoica will head the team of Armenia by June 30 after taking it over from Argentinian Oscar Lopez. Mirco Jozic, former coach of the Croatian team, has been unemployed for the last two years.

Legendary Hristo Stoitchkov was also tipped to assume the difficult task of leading the Bulgarian team towards the World Championship in 2006, but the union will reportedly dismiss his candidature over lack of enough experience.

The name of Bulgaria's new coach will be announced on July 12.

Plamen Markov resigned as coach of Bulgaria's national football team July 1 after poor performance at the European championship in Portugal, where his squad was trashed in its three games.

The Bulgarian Football Union had offered Markov a two-year contract extension, but the 46-year-old has decided to stand down having reached the end of his current deal.
