Bird Flu Outbreak in Vietnam

Vietnam had been struck with a bird-flu outbreak in the country's southern Mekong Delta region. The outbreak in the southern province of Bac Lieu had killed many chickens and local officials there had culled 5000 infected chickens at three farms in efforts to contain the virus. Initial tests conducted in Ho Chi Minh City had confirmed that the chickens tested positive for an H5 strain of bird flu, and further tests were being run to determine whether it was the dangerous H5N1 variant. That type of avian influenza swept through Asia earlier this year, killing or forcing the slaughter of more than 100 million poultry. The disease also jumped to people, killing 16 people in Vietnam and eight in Thailand.
