Czech Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla has resigned as both head of government and chairman of the Social Democratic Party. His statement broke on Saturday after narrowly surviving a no-confidence vote in his leadership of the party. His resignation poses a threat over the survival of the coalition government headed by the 53-year-old Spidla. Spidla has come under pressure to quit as party chairman after the Social Democrats won only two out of 24 seats in the European Parliament elections earlier this month.
