World | June 13, 2004, Sunday // 00:00

Citizens of 19 European Union nations, including France, Germany and Poland, are completing the European Parliament election this Sunday. Europe's biggest election ever began last Thursday in Britain and the Netherlands. At stake in the Strasbourg assembly are seats for 732 parliamentarians, who will represent almost 350 million citizens of the enlarged 25-nation EU. Lithuania is also electing a new president following the impeachment of the previous incumbent Rolandas Paksas. Luxembourg elects a new national parliament, while Belgians pick three new regional assemblies. Germany's eastern state of Thuringia elects a new regional assembly. Municipal elections are taking place within six other German states. Non-EU Serbia is trying, for a fourth time since 2002, to elect a president. Its previous ballots fell short of voting thresholds.
