India's Congress party has elected former finance minister Manmohan Singh as its parliamentary leader, effectively anointing him as the next prime minister. Congress MPs were holding a closed-door meeting to endorse Singh's candidature to lead a new coalition government after the shock defeat of the Hindu nationalist-led government. Singh, who started India's free-market reforms in 1991, is well respected for his integrity and intellect. If appointed, he would become India's first Sikh leader. Indira Gandhi were both assassinated.
