US President George W. Bush imposed new sanctions on Syria, charging it supported terrorism and failed to close its borders to insurgents looking to fight US forces in Iraq. The sanctions come on top of existing US terrorism penalties, including a near-blanket ban on US exports to Syria and the power to freeze Syrian assets in the United States. Bush warned that additional sanctions could be imposed on Damascus if it does not adopt a more positive approach to relations with its neighbors and WMDs.
