Branko Crvenkovski led the centre-left Social Democratic Alliance of Macedonia to election victory in September 2002 when former Albanian separatist commander Ali Ahmeti's Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) emerged as the third largest party in parliament.

Despite protests from Macedonian nationalists, parliament went on to approve Mr Crvenkovski's coalition cabinet in which the DUI has a deputy prime minister in Musa Khaferi, as well as several ministers.

Mr Crvenkovski came to office pledging to work for stability, cement peace and build integration. He also promised to fight corruption and build ties with the EU and Nato.

His government has seen unemployment spiralling and foreign investment in a slump.

A former Communist, he was previously prime minister from 1992 until 1998.
