Iraq's worsening hostage crisis should have no impact on the presence of Australian troops or civilians in the war-torn country, Prime Minister John Howard says. He said the wave of hostage-taking meant increased risk for foreigners, but it should not weaken the resolve of countries involved in the reconstruction of Iraq and he was not asking Australians to leave. In addition to the contactors, diplomats and other civilians in the country, Australia still has about 850 military personnel deployed largely in protection duties, or on air traffic control and maritime patrol. "I am not asking them to get out," Howard added.
