Myanmar to Release Opposition Leader

Myanmar's military government will free opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi by May 17 and invite her party to join a constitutional convention, the country's foreign minister said Saturday. Myanmar's Foreign Minister Win Aung made the announcement in an interview with Japan's NHK television network and Thailand's iTV channel soon after arriving in Bangkok for talks with Thai Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai. Win Aung said Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy will be invited to attend the constitution-drafting National Convention, which the junta has said will begin May 17.
