The US has imposed a veto on a United Nations Security Council resolution, which condemned the killing of the spiritual leader of Palestinian militant group Hamas, Sheikh Yassin. The leader of the hardline movement was killed in an Israeli air strike on Monday morning. The US described the resolution as "one-sided" and pressed for naming Palestinian militant groups in it. The resolution was already given the approval of eleven Security Council members. The veto can be imposed only by the five permanent members of the council. The text of the draft resolution condemned "the most recent extrajudicial execution committed by Israel" and "all attacks against any civilians as well as all acts of violence and destruction".
