Bulgaria moves to boost security at its only nuclear power plant. The fresh steps are aimed at preventing possible aircraft attacks.

Now the state wants permission to shoot down suspected attackers even when they are over Romania's territory. Defense Minister Nikolay Svinarov broke the news after returning from a visit in Bulgaria's northern neighbor.

A number of other European countries also tightened security at key sites after the Madrid bombings on March 11.
