CABINET TO DISCUSS NATO REPORT

Politics | October 30, 2001, Tuesday // 00:00

The Cabinet is to discuss the edited version of the “Structural Review of Bulgarian Armed Forces” report in a few days, Dnevnik Daily wrote. The report, together with many critical notes, was sent back to Bulgaria from NATO headquarters in Brussels a month ago. Only Nikolay Svinarov, Bulgaria’ s Defense Minister, will sign the document. The document is to be presented to the government. Because of the strong disagreement between the Defense Ministry and the General Staff over Bulgaria’s military reform, the document will not be presented to the Defense Ministry’s Council on Defense. In August 2001, the General Staff used the administrative vacuum after the June 17, 2001 general elections to send the report to Brussels. NATO representatives described the report as a complete revision of the earlier Plan 2004. Brussels officials demand the dismissal of 20,000 regular military personnel.
