The new Bulgarian Ambassador to Iran Dubrov Georgiev presented his credentials to President Khatami here Sunday [28 October]. President Khatami referred to the significant potentials for bilateral cooperation and expressed hope that Iran and Bulgaria can, by relying on cordial relations, build a better future for their nations. He also pointed to the strong resolve of both countries to boost economic ties.

Khatami said that given its experience in forging peaceful coexistence between Islam and Christianity, Bulgaria can play an important role in the process of dialogue between civilizations. The Bulgarian ambassador, for his part, touched on historical and cultural commonalties between the two countries and affirmed his government support for dialogue among civilizations.

He said Iran is strong regional and Muslim country and expressed his country's interest in strengthening trade and economic cooperation with Tehran.

Earlier in June, Khatami called for expansion of relations between Iran and Bulgaria in the cultural and economic fields both at the bilateral and international levels. President Khatami told the outgoing Ambassador of Bulgaria Ivan Velikov Petkov that exchange of visits by senior Iranian and Bulgarian delegations indicates the two countries' interest in expansion of ties.

Last year, visiting Bulgarian Minister of Transportation and Communication Antoni Slavinski said during his visit to Iran he has signed various agreements with Iranian officials on transport of passengers between the two countries and cooperation in construction of rail tracks. The minister also voiced his country's readiness to implement mutually-reached economic agreements.

Iran and Bulgaria have signed two economic and commercial protocols on transportation, he said. The two sides also signed a memorandum of understanding on urban development cooperation, he said. The Bulgarian minister held various meetings in Tehran with several high ranking officials on expansion of mutual economic and trade cooperation.
