The number of people affected by the Cyclone Gafilo, which ripped through the country's northern region on Sunday, has yet to be confirmed, but preliminary reports released by local authorities on Monday indicate that up to 100,000 people may be left without shelter. This tropical disaster has come less than a month after Cyclone Elita swept through Madagascar, killing then 29 people. Meanwhile, authorities have appealed for international assistance to cope with the aftermath of the heavy rains.
