Polls opened in Greece for a general election which could see the socialists lose power after more than a decade in office. Opinion polls are suggesting that the conservative opposition has a lead of a few percentage points, but the result is predicted to be extremely close. In the scramble for support, both parties are said to have chartered planes to fly in expatriate voters. George Papandreou is trying to win a fourth consecutive term for his Pasok party. Costas Karamanlis, leader of New Democracy, hopes to benefit from allegations of corruption and price rises, which have affected the government's popularity. About 10 million Greeks are eligible to cast ballots and voting is compulsory.
