Search Called off for Missing Greek Tanker Crew

The US Coast Guard gave up the search for 18 crewmen missing after a 173-metre Bow Mariner tanker carrying industrial ethanol exploded and sank off the Virginia coast on Saturday night. Six survivors were plucked from a life raft Saturday. The survivors, all men from the Philippines, have declined interview requests. The Singapore-flagged ship was a chemical tanker built in 1982 and managed by a Greek company, Ceres Hellenic Shipping Enterprises Ltd. Most of the industrial ethanol that spewed from the tanker evaporated immediately, though at places the ocean is still covered with sheen.
